Diastasis Recti Repair in Mexico City
98% of patients improved their abdominal trunk function one year after repair, and at three years the benefit was still there.
What it is and how it works
during pregnancy the line joining your abdominal muscles stretches and the rectus muscles separate. In many women that separation does not close on its own and does not respond to exercise, no matter how many abdominal workouts you do: this is called training-resistant diastasis. When that happens, your abdominal wall loses its function as a natural corset: the abdomen protrudes even without fat, the core loses stability, load is transferred to your lower back, and continence can be affected. Repair means bringing that line back together with sutures, restoring the tension of the wall.
What it treats, in detail
- An abdomen that protrudes even when you are slim, especially at the end of the day or with exertion.
- A sense of weakness or of “having no core”.
- Lower back pain associated with lack of abdominal support.
- Urine leakage when coughing, laughing, sneezing or training.
- Difficulty regaining abdominal strength despite training.
- A midline bulge when sitting up.
How we do it here
first we measure the separation by levels, check for an associated hernia, which changes the technique, and assess whether you have excess skin, because that defines the approach. If you have excess skin, the repair is done within an abdominoplasty. If you do not, there are minimal-incision or endoscopic approaches, and we will propose those rather than a major surgery you do not need. A criterion we respect: we operate symptomatic, training-resistant diastasis, not any separation found on examination. If you have not done targeted physiotherapy, that is the first step. And when there are pelvic floor symptoms, we assess the case together with specialized physiotherapy.
Who it’s for
if you have diastasis with symptoms that do not resolve with supervised exercise. Recent literature has treated separations of 2 to 10 centimeters. Stable weight and no near-term pregnancy plans.
Who it’s not for
if you plan to become pregnant, because pregnancy undoes the repair. Also not with significant obesity, if you smoke, if there is an undiagnosed hernia, or if you have not first attempted conservative treatment.
What to expect
- 01
general anesthesia with a regional block to control pain, lasting 2 to 6 hours depending on the areas treated.
- 02
We recommend one night of hospitalization to monitor you and manage pain properly.
- 03
Drains are placed in all our body contouring surgeries.
- 04
You will wear compression garments for 3 months, with first- and second-stage garments from a specialized Brazilian brand, changing stages as swelling subsides.
- 05
Your recovery is not just waiting: it includes an intensive physiotherapy protocol with lymphatic drainage, device-assisted therapy and dermatofunctional physiotherapy, with two clear goals, modulating fibrosis and getting the most from your skin’s retraction without leaving sequelae.
- 06
Hyperbaric chamber sessions are added to that.
- 07
Exercise deferred to 8 to 12 weeks, not 4 to 6 as in other contouring surgeries, precisely because the rectus plication must be protected.
- 08
Final contour appears between 3 and 6 months, when swelling subsides and the skin finishes retracting.
- 09
We tell you plainly: the plication is the most uncomfortable part, and the restriction on abdominal effort for 6 to 8 weeks is non-negotiable, because it protects the repair.
Risks and what we tell you honestly
besides the risks of abdominoplasty, the plication has its own: postoperative pain and tension, a feeling of tightness the first days, and recurrence of the diastasis, especially with a later pregnancy or with premature exertion. In the double-row plication cohort there was no recurrence assessed by CT at one year, but that depends on respecting the recovery. And an important honesty point: the repair improves lower back pain in a documented way, but we do not promise it will disappear, because back pain is usually multifactorial.
Beyond aesthetics
this is the reason this page exists, and it is where the evidence is strongest in our entire surgical catalog.
Myth vs reality
Myth
“Abdominal exercises will close it.”
Reality
if your diastasis is training-resistant, they will not. And there is more: certain abdominal exercises done without control can increase pressure and worsen the bulge. That is why the first step is targeted physiotherapy, not more crunches. If it does not resolve and you have symptoms, surgery does have a supported functional indication, and at that point the evidence is among the strongest in plastic surgery.
