Inverted Nipple, Areola and Nipple Correction in Mexico City
Small procedures, usually under local anesthesia with quick recovery, and an enormous impact on something many patients carry in silence for years.
What it is and how it works
these are three distinct corrections of the nipple-areola complex, which can be done alone or combined with other breast surgery.
What it treats, in detail
- A large or widened areola after pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Diameter asymmetry between areolas.
- A very projected or thick nipple that rubs against clothing or shows through.
- An inverted nipple that will not come out, or that comes out and retracts again.
- Difficulty or inability to breastfeed due to nipple inversion.
- Irritation, pain or recurrent mastitis associated with inversion.
How we do it here
there are two conversations we always have. First, whether you want to preserve the possibility of breastfeeding, because that defines the technique: some approaches preserve the ducts and others divide them, and the latter give more projection and less recurrence but compromise breastfeeding. It is a decision made beforehand and it cannot be undone, so we discuss it unhurriedly. Second, in inverted nipple we classify the grade: whether it everts easily, whether it everts and immediately retracts, or whether it cannot be everted at all. That determines whether conservative methods are worth trying first or whether surgery is the direct path. And one precaution we do not negotiate: if your nipple inverted recently as an adult, we first investigate the breast, because it can be a sign of something else. That comes before any aesthetic correction.
Who it’s for
practically any adult with one of these situations. They are among the procedures with the best ratio between how small the surgery is and how large the change is.
Who it’s not for
we do not operate with active infection or mastitis, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with a recent inversion that has not been investigated. If you have a history of keloids, we assess that first.
What to expect
- 01
these are in-office procedures.
- 02
Nipple reduction is done under local anesthesia and takes about an hour.
- 03
For the areola and for inverted nipple we use local anesthesia, with sedation when the case calls for it.
- 04
Recovery is immediate and the only real restriction is 10 days without exercise and without submerging in water, no pool, bathtub or sea, to keep the stitches clean and dry.
- 05
Sutures come out around the first week.
- 06
In inverted nipple correction we use a support device for the first days, and that is part of the result, not an optional detail.
- 07
The scar matures over months and in this area is usually very discreet.
- 08
Return to activity within a few days and suture removal around the first week.
- 09

Risks and what we tell you honestly
in areola reduction, the most frequent complication is the scar widening over time, which is why it cannot be reduced as much as you might like: closing under tension guarantees stretching. In nipple reduction, sensation can change, almost always temporarily. In inverted nipple, the main risk is recurrence, especially in more marked grades, and most occurs within the first year; no technique eliminates it entirely. In all three, there is a scar, though small and well hidden.
Beyond aesthetics
in inverted nipple the benefit is clearly functional, and that is what motivates us most about this procedure. In marked grades breastfeeding is practically impossible without correction, and there are series where patients operated with duct-preserving techniques were able to breastfeed afterward. Irritation, pain and recurrent mastitis are also resolved. And something the literature documents: the main reasons patients seek treatment are difficulty breastfeeding and interference with their sexual life, not aesthetics.
Myth vs reality
Myth
“An inverted nipple is purely an aesthetic issue.”
Reality
in marked grades it prevents breastfeeding, and it is associated with irritation, pain and recurrent mastitis. It is a condition many patients carry in silence since adolescence believing it has no solution, when it is corrected with an in-office procedure under local anesthesia.
