Combined Procedures and Hand Rejuvenation in Mexico City

In an analysis of more than 25,000 abdominoplasties, the complication risk went from 3.1% when performed alone to 6.8% when combined with another contouring procedure. That is why our default recommendation is to divide into two stages.

What it is and how it works

combining several procedures in a single surgery when it is safe to do so. The most requested combinations are the mommy makeover, addressing the changes of pregnancy with abdominoplasty, diastasis repair and breast surgery; full facial rejuvenation, adding facelift, eyelids and fat grafting; and the body makeover, combining body contouring. To that we add hand rejuvenation with fat grafting, a small procedure that often stays pending even though hands reveal age as much as the face.

What it treats, in detail

How we do it here

we understand why you want to combine, and it is valid: one anesthesia, one recovery, one period off work. But a convenient package should not define a surgical decision. That is why we start by recommending two stages and only combine when your assessment confirms it is safe in your case. The criterion is not how many procedures fit, it is how much surgical time is safe: the body contouring literature recommends staying under 6 hours, because longer duration increases the risk of thrombosis, hypothermia and wound complications. We also check that the aftercare is compatible, because some procedures interfere with each other. For hands, complete treatment has two parts: volume with your own fat and spots with intense pulsed light or laser; treating only one leaves the job half done.

Who it’s for

if you are healthy, with stable weight, do not smoke and have several areas you want treated. In mommy makeover, ideally with no pregnancy plans and breastfeeding completed.

Who it’s not for

if you have significant comorbidity, uncontrolled obesity, smoke, or have a history of thrombosis without adequate prophylaxis. And if the combination you want would exceed safe surgical time, we will propose stages, even if that means two recoveries.

What to expect

  1. 01

general anesthesia, major surgery, with thrombosis prophylaxis, temperature control and monitoring.

  2. 02

Recovery is more demanding than for an isolated procedure, because it adds up the restrictions of each.

  3. 03

In mommy makeover there is something practical we discuss beforehand and not afterward: you will have lifting restrictions, and if you have young children, support at home must be arranged.

  4. 04

Hand rejuvenation is short, under local anesthesia, and you return to activity within days.

Risks and what we tell you honestly

here we give you the figure that supports our position and also the one that qualifies it. In an analysis of 25,478 abdominoplasties, complication risk rose in a stepwise fashion depending on what was combined: 3.1% for abdominoplasty alone, 3.8% adding liposuction, 4.3% adding breast surgery, 4.6% adding both, and 6.8% adding another body contouring procedure. That gradient is the concrete reason we start from recommending two stages. And the qualifier, because the literature is not unanimous: another study with 55,596 patients reports an overall rate of 2.1% and concludes that, after adjusting for risk factors, there was no significant increase in major complications when combining. The difference lies in what is measured, total complications or only major ones. Our reading, and we present it as such: combining is safe when the patient and the surgical time allow it, which is why we assess it case by case rather than offering it as a package. For hands, part of the fat resorbs and a second stage may be needed, and over-grafting leaves a bulky dorsum that looks artificial.

Beyond aesthetics

there is one figure worth keeping in mind, because it qualifies the above in the right direction. In the prospective study of 360 patients, combining liposuction with abdominoplasty achieved the highest satisfaction of all approaches, above 99%, and with no increase in pain compared with abdominoplasty alone. In other words, a well-selected combination delivers excellent results; what we avoid is combining too much. To that add, in mommy makeover, the documented functional benefits of diastasis repair: improved trunk function in 98% of patients, reduced lower back pain and improved incontinence symptoms. Additionally, a single anesthesia and a single recovery period have real practical and financial value when the combination is safe.

Myth vs reality

Myth

“Since I am having surgery, do everything at once.”

Reality

we understand the impulse, and the data is clear: across more than 25,000 abdominoplasties, complication risk doubled going from the surgery alone to combining it with another contouring procedure. Surgical time is the factor that most increases risk. That is why our default recommendation is to divide into two stages and combine only when your assessment allows it. We would rather propose two surgeries and have you safe than propose one for convenience.
