Umbilicoplasty in Mexico City
The navel is what most reveals a tummy tuck. That is why it is planned, not improvised.
What it is and how it works
we correct the shape, size or position of the navel. It is important to know that the navel is not an organ, it is a scar: its appearance depends on depth, the shape of the ring and the tension of the surrounding skin. A natural-looking navel is usually small, vertically oriented and with a slight hood above. Those that look operated tend to be too round, too large or positioned too high.
What it treats, in detail
- A prominent or “outie” navel.
- A widened or distorted navel after pregnancies or weight changes.
- A navel with a poor result from a previous tummy tuck.
- Creating a navel when it was lost in an earlier surgery.
- As part of the planning of an abdominoplasty.
How we do it here
the first step is ruling out an umbilical hernia, because that completely changes the plan: if there is one, it must be repaired rather than only correcting the shape. Then we assess the position relative to your iliac crests and define the desired shape with you. When it is part of an abdominoplasty, navel transposition is planned with the same care as the rest of the surgery, because it is the detail that defines the perceived quality of the result.
Who it’s for
if your navel is prominent, has widened or become distorted, or if you did not like how it looked after a previous surgery. It is a small procedure with high impact on how you look in swimwear.
Who it’s not for
if there is an undiagnosed hernia, that is investigated first. Also not with active infection. And if your navel sits very high or very low, isolated correction has limits: significantly changing its position requires an abdominoplasty.
What to expect
- 01
when isolated, usually under local anesthesia, as an outpatient and in a short time.
- 02
Quick recovery, with local wound care and avoiding abdominal effort for a few weeks.
Risks and what we tell you honestly
there is always a scar, though placed at the border and barely visible. There can be infection, stenosis or a shape different from the one sought. If the navel is transposed within an abdominoplasty, there is a risk of partial necrosis, especially in smokers.
Beyond aesthetics
it is aesthetic, except when there is an associated hernia, in which case repair does have a functional indication. Its value lies in confidence wearing swimwear or cropped clothing, a more frequent reason for consultation than it seems.
Myth vs reality
Myth
“An outie navel is purely aesthetic.”
Reality
not always. A prominent or everted navel is frequently associated with an umbilical hernia, and in that case correcting only the shape would be a mistake. That is why the first thing we do is examine and rule it out.
