Body Contouring After Weight Loss in Mexico City

In studies with validated scales, satisfaction with the abdomen rose from 13 to 90 points out of 100 one year after surgery.

What it is and how it works

it is not one surgery, it is a staged program. And first of all, so you know that your situation is the norm and not the exception: up to 89% of patients who undergo bariatric surgery develop skin laxity, especially on the arms and abdomen. When you lose a lot of weight, whether through bariatric surgery, habits or medical treatment, the skin does not retract: an excess remains that wraps around the trunk and affects abdomen, flanks, back, breasts, arms and thighs. That excess is not only aesthetic. It causes dermatitis and infections in the folds, makes hygiene difficult, limits exercise, and weighs on the body image of someone who has just achieved an enormous change.

What it treats, in detail

How we do it here

first, we do not operate immediately, we prepare. We review your nutritional status with labs and correct deficiencies, and we work with an eating plan with adequate protein from weeks before surgery until all your wounds have closed, because in post-weight-loss patients that directly conditions healing. Then we plan the stages: we prioritize what most affects your function and daily life, group what is compatible, and separate what together would make the surgery too long. We tell you from the first consultation that it will be several surgeries, because proposing that is not a limitation, it is the safe way to do it.

Who it’s for

if you have lost a lot of weight and have excess skin, with stable weight ideally for 12 months, corrected nutritional status and no smoking.

Who it’s not for

if your weight is still dropping or unstable, if your labs show uncorrected deficiencies, or if you smoke. In those cases it is not that it cannot be done: it is that you need preparation first, and operating earlier compromises your healing.

What to expect

  1. 01

these are major surgeries, with thrombosis prophylaxis and longer recoveries than conventional aesthetic surgery.

  2. 02

Each procedure has its own detailed page.

  3. 03

What defines this program is the interval between stages and the support: nutrition before and after, and dermatofunctional physiotherapy for recovery.

Risks and what we tell you honestly

the complication rate in post-weight-loss body contouring is high, reported between 23% and 70% across series, mostly wound-related. The factors that increase it are identified: smoking, greater weight lost, unstable weight, elevated body mass index and nutritional deficiencies. Scars are extensive and permanent: the trade-off is real, excess skin is exchanged for scars. And it is not all resolved in one surgery, nor do we aim for that.

There is something else we prefer to tell you because it affects your result over the years: weight regain after body contouring exists and has been measured. In a study of 121 patients with an average follow-up of 3.5 years, the average increase was 2.30% of body weight, and the difference between groups was marked: 4.39% in those who came from bariatric surgery versus 0.25% in those who lost weight by other means. The authors put it well: this does not question the benefit of surgery, it clarifies what you can expect in the following years. For us it means that nutritional support afterward is not an extra, it is part of the treatment.

Beyond aesthetics

this is where the functional benefit is greatest in our entire catalog. A systematic review shows statistically significant improvements in physical function, psychological well-being and social function. And it is not a short-term effect: a Danish cohort study published in Annals of Surgery confirms that satisfaction with appearance and health-related quality of life remain improved in the long term. In a study with a validated scale at 12 months, abdominal area scores rose from 13 to 90 and overall body image from 24 to 67. And there is a finding worth knowing if you fear complications: in that same study, patients who did have a postoperative complication rated their overall result just as well as those who did not.

Myth vs reality

Myth

“Body contouring will help me keep losing weight.”

Reality

no, and it is an argument used frequently. One study compared patients who underwent body contouring with patients who only had a consultation, and concluded that the impact of contouring on weight loss is minimal, and that the apparent benefits are psychosocial and related to physical functioning, not metabolic. Put differently: this surgery will change how you look, how you move and how you feel, and that is a great deal. What it will not do is make you lose weight, and we would rather you know that beforehand.
