Tummy Tuck and Lipoabdominoplasty in Mexico City

In a prospective study of 360 patients, combining liposuction with abdominoplasty achieved a satisfaction rate above 99%. 98% would have the surgery again and 99% would recommend it.

What it is and how it works

let us start with what only this surgery can do. It is the only way to remove excess skin: no device, no energy and no liposuction will retract skin that has already lost its elasticity. That said, a protruding abdomen can involve three different things, and you need to know which is yours because each requires something different. It can be fat, which is aspirated. It can be excess skin, which must be removed. Or it can be separated rectus muscles, diastasis, which must be repaired. Many patients have all three. Abdominoplasty removes the skin, repairs the muscle when needed and repositions the navel. Lipoabdominoplasty does all of that and additionally sculpts the waist, flanks and back with liposuction, in the same procedure.

What it treats, in detail

How we do it here

today most of our patients need lipoabdominoplasty rather than a classic abdominoplasty, because rarely is only one thing missing. The key technical point is preserving the perforators, the vessels that supply the abdominal skin: by preserving them we can aspirate extensively without compromising blood supply, which was the historic concern about combining these two surgeries. In a prospective study of 100 cases using this technique, no patient developed abdominal flap necrosis. We mark you standing, plan the height of your scar according to the underwear you wear, check for hernia and assess your diastasis. And we pay particular attention to the navel, because it is the detail that most reveals an abdominoplasty: it is planned, not improvised.

Who it’s for

if you have excess abdominal skin that will not go away with exercise, if you have diastasis, or if your abdomen became lax after pregnancies or weight loss. Stable weight for at least 6 months and no near-term pregnancy plans.

Who it’s not for

if you smoke, it is a major contraindication and not a recommendation: tobacco significantly increases the risk of flap necrosis and wound dehiscence. It is reason to postpone until you stop. Also not with unstable weight, uncontrolled obesity, or if you plan to become pregnant, because pregnancy undoes much of the result.

What to expect

  1. 01

general anesthesia with a regional block to control pain, lasting 2 to 6 hours depending on the areas treated.

  2. 02

We recommend one night of hospitalization to monitor you and manage pain properly.

  3. 03

Drains are placed in all our body contouring surgeries.

  4. 04

You will wear compression garments for 3 months, with first- and second-stage garments from a specialized Brazilian brand, changing stages as swelling subsides.

  5. 05

Your recovery is not just waiting: it includes an intensive physiotherapy protocol with lymphatic drainage, device-assisted therapy and dermatofunctional physiotherapy, with two clear goals, modulating fibrosis and getting the most from your skin’s retraction without leaving sequelae.

  6. 06

Hyperbaric chamber sessions are added to that.

  7. 07

Exercise at 4 to 6 weeks, with one important exception: if we repair your abdominal wall with rectus plication, exercise is deferred to 8 to 12 weeks, to protect that repair.

  8. 08

Final contour appears between 3 and 6 months, when swelling subsides and the skin finishes retracting.

  9. 09

Drains are placed, and the first days you will be in a flexed position.

  10. 10

The scar matures over 12 to 18 months.

Risks and what we tell you honestly

we give you the real figures. In an analysis of 25,478 abdominoplasties, the overall complication rate was 4.0%, compared with 1.4% for the rest of aesthetic surgery; of those complications, 31.5% were hematomas, 27.2% infections and 20.2% thrombotic events. The factors that raise risk are identified: male sex, age 55 or older, body mass index of 30 or higher, and combining several procedures. Separately, seroma is the most frequent complication in follow-up and is well quantified: in a meta-analysis of 143 studies and nearly 28,000 patients, overall prevalence was 10.9%. Knowing that allows us to prevent it with technique, drains, compression and early physiotherapy. Other risks are hematoma, infection, wound dehiscence, widened scar, excess at the ends of the scar, and thrombosis, the serious complication we actively prevent. Something you should know: sensation in the lower abdominal skin usually remains permanently altered, to a greater or lesser degree. And the scar is long and permanent: the honest conversation is not whether there will be one, but where it sits.

Beyond aesthetics

the satisfaction data for this surgery are among the best in the specialty. In the prospective study of 360 patients, combining liposuction with abdominoplasty achieved more than 99% satisfaction, with no increase in pain compared with abdominoplasty alone; 86% reported improved self-esteem and around 70% improved quality of life. In a study using validated scales in 95 cases, both patients and clinicians reported significant improvements, and patients described greater improvement than their own surgeons perceived, regardless of the variables tested. The authors conclude that surgeons tend to underestimate how much the patient improves. In patients coming from bariatric surgery, satisfaction with self-esteem rose from 11% before to 84% after.

To that adds the functional side: when there is a skin apron, surgery resolves dermatitis and recurrent infections in the fold, improves hygiene and restores the ability to exercise. And when the diastasis is repaired, well-documented functional benefits are added, which we explain in detail on the diastasis repair page. There is evidence of improved health-related quality of life in both physical and psychosocial domains.

Myth vs reality

Myth

“Liposuction will get rid of my belly.”

Reality

it depends on what you have. If what is left over is skin, liposuction will not retract it and may leave it laxer. If your muscles are separated, aspirating fat does not bring them together and the abdomen will keep protruding even if you are slim. And if the fat is inside the abdomen, the cannula does not reach it. That is why the assessment defines the procedure, not the other way around.
